These walkie talkies came in a small box with a multi-language instruction manual and were packed snuggly. They have an all plastic exterior and are very lightweight. Walkie talkies that have the same plastic construction generally have less features than these. Note that other brands' antennae with the same plastic housing have broken after extended use, and that only time will tell if these hold up.The manufacturer describes these as "for kids" on the product packaging and within the description, but they have all the features of higher end two-way radios and are comfortable to hold. They will work for younger kids as well if you set them up and lock the settings for them. The features of these two-way radios include:- 22 primary channel selection -> verified to have the same channels are other high-end radios- CTCSS sub-channel code selection -> verified- a stated 3-mile range -> only verified up to 500 feet- multiple ringtones -> verified- flashlight -> verified to work, can be turned on even when the radio is off, and not super bright but provides decent illumination in the dark- VOX -> verified to have 3 different voice activation settings for hands-free useThe only drawbacks to these two-way radios are the use of 4 AAA batteries which can be overcome by using rechargeable batteries so they don't eat through alkalines too quickly, and the aforementioned all plastic housing. The only other shortcoming that was noticed was that if you set the volume to any of the lower settings your voice is too soft for other parties to hear clearly, but this was easily remedied by setting the volume to at least 4 (out of 8 max).Overall, these walkie talkies are actually fully functional two-way radios and are recommended for both adults and kids as they are a great value.
