These are designed for small hands. (Yes, ages 6 and up, however under supervision the five year old was the key mastermind in the family water balloon fight. The older kids 10 and 13 were enjoying it as well and yes happily got into the fun instead of sulking like teens do.) The walkie-talkies are about the size of a juice box, buttons are easy to use and similar to look of cell phone like functions. It's easy to show them how they work, the instructions help, and even talk about understanding how walkie talkies work. Use of "over" and "over and out" and CB radio like lingo is cool to know! That helped so they knew both parties are heard clearly. The small size made them easily concealed for that covert operation dubbed: water balloon mom and dad for pizza. We were "unsuspecting," they had great range all through the house. (Didn't let them test the over a mile away aspect. They are NOT water proof, but cheap enough we aren't worried if anything did happen. Which thankfully didn't, just needing batteries was the only fuss in the house.) But we adults were happy the batteries were kept out of young curious hands by a screw holding them in safely. The three optional channels kept their mission safe and secure. Yes, mom and dad both took an orchestrated barrage of water balloons, please get them water balloons with these you will unleash their creativity and fun. Eventually we parents succeeded, the pizza was well earned after great fun on a hot day. Even after the fun we heard the crackle of the walkie-talkies and the "over" and "over and out" through out the evening. It's worth it to find anything new to try and get them outside to play, especially something that isn't a video game, and helps find their creative side.
